Background
The Xplora app redesign marked the company’s first major step toward realising its vision of a family-focused platform. The goal was to transition the app from a companion for kids’ smartwatches into a comprehensive virtual hub that caters to teens, parents, kids, and seniors. This strategic shift aimed to support Xplora’s expanding product portfolio, including senior watches and smartphones for all age groups, while addressing critical user pain points and modernising the system architecture.
Challenge
Process
The redesign began with extensive user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing. The team mapped the current architecture, user flows, and journeys, and drafted new solutions to address the pain points systematically.

Solution
Through user research and feedback analysis, the team identified three key pain points:
Scalable Architecture:
The existing system was tailored to kids' smartwatches, limiting its ability to support a broader family ecosystem.Seamless Navigation:
Users reported difficulty accessing essential features quickly, with cluttered menus and unintuitive layouts hindering their experience.Consistent UI:
The app lacked a unified visual identity, which impacted user confidence and the brand's ability to scale cohesively.
Key Improvements
Onboarding Experience:
Implemented Single Sign-On (SSO) with Google and Apple to simplify the sign-in process.
Reduced the sign-up flow by 65%, making onboarding faster and user-friendly.
Introduced biometric login for Android and iOS, enhancing security and convenience.
Added a guided tutorial to familiarise users with the app's features.
Family Hub Home Screen:
Designed a centralised family hub where users could check on all family members and devices at a glance.
Swipe functionality enabled quick switching between profiles and devices, improving usability.
Navigation Redesign:
Optimised the navigation menu to focus on key features: Hub, Maps, Messages, and Goplay.
Data-driven decisions ensured users could reach the most important features in one tap.
Maps Feature:
Enhanced the UX and UI for family location tracking, providing a high-level overview of all members.
Introduced safety mode, low-connection alerts, and visibility into kids’ locations and actions.
Subscription Management:
Simplified the process of managing subscriptions directly within the app, reducing user confusion and enhancing control.
Design System and Visual Direction:
Built a scalable design system to future-proof the Xplora ecosystem and support upcoming features like Goplay and smartphones.
Introduced a 3D style and vibrant gradients, blending fun aesthetics for kids with a professional tone for parents and seniors.
The design system includes guidelines for responsive design, breakpoints, page margins, padding guidelines, illustrations, icons. We have also built a library of components which include colours, text styles, buttons, form fields and much more.
